Five Inexpensive and Easy Christmas Decorations

Hey all! Do you know what’s crazy? Christmas is in fourteen days….two weeks! How is it almost Christmas time when we literally just celebrated Thanksgiving??

I try my best to enjoy the holiday season every year, really take in the joy and wonder of it all. But sometimes it just goes so quickly and it’s hard to keep up with the excitement. One of my biggest challenges this holiday season has been trying to keep my house festive while working around a tight budget that’s already being stretched by shopping for gifts. It is not easy, but I’ve been able to find some awesome DIY  ideas that I want to share with you guys.

Here are five inexpensive and easy Christmas decorations to try!

1. Jar of Ornaments – My husband and I have many Christmas tree ornaments that weren’t able to fit on our tree this year, so I decided to put some of them in a uniquely shaped jar and set them out as decoration. Simple, easy, and they stand out.

2. DIY Ornaments – This project is a lot of fun, and makes for a sweet date night with a significant other or a group of close friends! Kris and I went to Michaels for a set of plain glass ornaments and decorated them with things like pipe cleaners and acrylic paint. You can even start a tradition of adding a new one to your tree each year! The photos I tried taking of my ornaments are pretty terrible, so I am declining to share them. No professional camera unfortunately. However you can find plenty of other ideas online 🙂

3. Greenery – This isn’t necessarily a Christmas decoration, but it brings some color into your home and can look festive. You can buy a bundle of greenery at the store and place them in a vase as a centerpiece somewhere. I bought these for around $2.00 at Safeway, and I love how they look on my dining table. They command your attention!

4. Pinecones in a Jar – I had some scented pinecones out in a woven basket shaped like a pumpkin during the Fall months. I wasn’t ready to put them away just yet, so I grabbed a mason jar and put them inside as decoration. To be honest, I feel silly for calling this decoration. It’s pinecones in a jar (LOL)…But sometimes I enjoy doing things differently, I personally find this to be simple and adorable. You can gather them outside if you find any, and if you wanted to, you could add some fake snow to the pinecones to make it look more wintery and festive. You can find out how to do this here.

5. Christmas Movie Quote – A fun fact about me: Not only do I speak English, but I am also quite fluent in movie quotes. Anyone who knows me well can attest to this. I take whatever opportunity I see available to reference or quote a movie, so what better way for me to make my home festive than adding a movie quote to my wall somewhere?? I painted this “Son of a nutcracker” sign in reference to Elf. It’s one of my favorite Christmas movies ♥ You could purchase a wood piece for a decent price at a craft store and paint it like I did, or even write in a pretty font on paper, and place it in a frame and hang it up for everyone to see!

Let me know in the comments what you think, and please let me know about any other decoration ideas you might have. I love trying new things 🙂 Thank you so much for reading!

Five Steps to Decorating A Room

I don’t know about any of you, but I spend a lot of time in the bathroom. Weird way to begin a blog post, right? But stay with me. It’s where I spend an hour each day – sometimes two getting ready every morning. As an aside, I have the world’s tiniest bladder so I’m in there every five minutes just for that, TMI, but sadly true.

Some of this might be true for you as well. Do you spend your mornings in front of the bathroom mirror getting yourself pretty for the day? Who could resist those hot showers when waking up is difficult and the hot water is your only solace?

On Friday, I decided I would go out with a small budget in hand and redecorate my apartment bathroom. I figure, if I spend so much time in there, shouldn’t I enjoy my surroundings? The last time I attempted to decorate the bathroom, it didn’t turn out so great, so I really planned things out this time around. So for this post, I thought I’d share the steps I took to make the room turn out just how I want it.

  1. Decide on a vibe/theme – This was the most important step for me in the process. I want to enjoy the room I spend so much time in. Most of what I do in the bathroom is get ready for the day. I have early mornings most of the time, so I want to feel relaxed  in this space, like it’s a spa or something.
  2. Decide on a color scheme – Deciding on a couple of different colors helps me focus more when shopping for items. Also, once I’ve decided a theme or mood for the room, choosing colors becomes easier for me. I chose blue, green, grey and earthy elements like wood.
  3. Assess what you have that you can still make use of – As much as I love shopping for home decor, I would prefer to save as much money as I can. Before I go out and buy anything, I look at what things I’d like to keep for the room, whether that means keeping it there for its original purpose, or repurposing it entirely. Ask yourself “What works in this room? What is causing clutter? What do I use often and what could go into cupboard storage?”
  4. Make a visual plan for the room – Once you have cleared out the space, try to envision what you want in the room, and where and for what purpose. Doing this helps me put together a shopping list for what I don’t already have that I’d like to incorporate.
  5. Clean the room, and then get to decorating! – A bathroom can never be too clean in my eyes, I wiped everything down, dusted and disinfected before putting the elements together. It’s just a personal thing, but I prefer a clean room before it’s decorated or rearranged.

These are the steps I took to making my bathroom a calm and relaxing oasis, and I couldn’t be happier with the results! If you are stuck trying to figure out how to decorate a room, hopefully this process helps you along the way.

Apologies For My Sudden Disappearance…

Hey all, how have you been?? Well I hope 🙂

It has been SO LONG since I last posted anything on Little Things. It wasn’t planned, but I ended up taking a small break. A lot has been going on in my personal life lately. I just got a new job that I’m very excited for, I’ve had some dietary issues that have been little bit distracting, (no more dairy for this kid…), and financially, my husband and I have had to reign it in with the spending. There are so many things happening, that I just decided I needed some time to process it all. I’m totally fine, everything is fine, all is good. But I really needed to change my priorities a bit, so I have been doing zero writing on here.

I’m probably not going to start posting right away now that I have things more together, I’m thinking about changing up my blog a little bit. I LOVE talking to you guys about craft projects and decorating my apartment, but it isn’t enough to keep a consistent writing schedule, so I’m going to try and add more categories on Little Things. I might post a recipe here and there, some personal thoughts, and I would also love to be more of a photographer in my spare time, so I might share my photos with you guys too. I’m still working it out, but I’ll be back to writing soon.

I saw that many of you have been checking up on my blog now and then, and I truly appreciate every single person who takes the time to read my content. ♥♥ THANK YOU!

You will be seeing my content again very soon, probably in the next couple of weeks.

Thanks for reading!

A Year of Little Things

Hey readers! I hope you’re all having a great weekend so far 🙂

Today is a good day, because a year ago today, I started Little Things. I cannot believe I have made it an entire year with this, but I am so proud of myself! I have attempted blogging a few times before Little Things, only to give up on it just a couple of months in, but I realize my mistakes now. I was never passionate about the subject material until I came up with Little Things. I love all things crafting and home decorating, and getting to share with a small audience is heaven to me. A true passion. This blog has been a wonderful adventure, and it has made me grow in more ways than I thought it could. I am excited for the new blogging year ahead of me, and I only want to create more content.

I just want to thank everyone who reads my blog for giving it a chance. I am so thankful for all of you who read, and it makes me feel like the content I put out is meaningful. Though I realize blogging isn’t only about how many followers you have, it does make a huge difference when people read my posts. It helps me to know what’s popular and useful and what I should improve on or get rid of altogether. So again, THANK YOU SO MUCH for tuning in each week for what I put out.

I would like to conclude this post by giving you all an opportunity to reach out to me. I may have been doing this for a year, but I still have so much growth to accomplish. Any advice you’d like to give or any suggestions or encouragements you have would be greatly appreciated. I would love the feedback. The WordPress community is a strong one, and I appreciate the effort so many bloggers put towards lifting up one another ♥

Thank you again so so much to everyone who reads my blog ♥

Year two is going to be the best yet!
